Transformation This work takes its inspiration from Charles Marville's photographs of Haussmann's 19th century redevelopment of Paris. In my case the place under consideration is London's East End, which is undergoing a major transformation driven by building redevelopment. Opinion on what is happening is deeply polarised. Some view the changes as positive, breathing life into economically depressed areas. Others view the changes as unsympathetic to the character of the place and as ripping the heart out of local communities. The images, made with a pinhole camera, appear like 'old' photographs. The disjuncture between the style of representation and the modernity of the content draws attention to the question of how appropriate many of these developments are. The antique style of the photographs also alludes to the role of nostalgia in the debate. Keith Greenough, March 2016
